Let's Get To The Root of Dental Pain - Part One - The Symptoms

We all know how bad dental pain can be and, when it happens you just want to find an experienced endodontist to carry out root canal treatment and get it sorted out - fast.

What Are The Possible Symptoms of Root Canal Related Problems ?

There are a number of symptoms which may indicate that you have a dental problem that requires root canal treatment. If you have any of these symptoms you should consult a dentist straightaway.

Sensitive Teeth When Eating Hot or Cold Foods
This discomfort may only only last for a few moments in which case it may mean that the pulp of your tooth is inflamed. On the other hand, however, the sensitivity problem may be caused as a result of there being a small amount of tooth decay present, or it could be due to a loose filling or possibly gum recession.

If you are experiencing sensitivity a good first level of action could be to try using a de-sensitising toothpaste. If, however, this is unsuccessful, you should make an appointment to see your dentist to get further advice.

Dental work may inflame the pulp inside the tooth causing temporary sensitivity.

If you've recently had dental work carried out, wait a few weeks to see if the sensitivity subsides. If it doesn't, and the pain persists or gets worse, make an appointment to see your regular dentist.

Sharp pain when biting down on food

There are several possible causes of this type of pain, including decay, a loose filling or sometimes even a crack in the tooth. It is also possible that there is damage to the pulp tissue inside the tooth.

If this happens to you, the first thing you should do is visit your regular dentist and ask for an evaluation. If the problem does turn out to be pulp tissue damage, your dentist may refer you to an Endodontist to get root canal treatment.

Lingering pain after you have eaten hot or cold food
This type of pain usually indicates that the pulp in your tooth has been damaged. This could be due to  deep decay or some kind of physical trauma.
You are advised to see your general dentist for further advice or contact an Endodontist who can carry out root canal work to save the tooth.

You have constant severe pain and or swelling of the gums and sensitivity to touch
It is likely that you may have an abscess which has caused an infection in the surrounding tissue and bone. If this happens to you, see an Endodontist for an evaluation and treatment to relieve the pain and to try to save the tooth.

You have a dull ache and feel pressure in the upper teeth and the jaw
It is common for the pain from a sinus headache to be felt in the face and teeth. It is also a fact that grinding of teeth, which is a condition known as bruxism, can cause this type of ache.
Check with your GP for relief of a sinus headache. For bruxism, you should consult your normal dentist straightaway. If, however, the pain is severe and chronic then you should see an Endodontist for an evaluation as soon as possible.
